Westminster College to screen French film on Chanel on Feb. 7

“Coco avant Chanel” (Coco before Chanel), the second film in Westminster College’s Tournées Film Festival, will be shown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.  The event is free and open to the public.

The contemporary film will be subtitled in English.  A discussion will follow the screening.

The 2009 film is directed by Anne Fontaine. It earned honors for Best Costume Design (César Awards, France), Film Composer of the Year (World Soundtrack Awards), and Best Music (Ėtoiles d’Or) and was nominated for numerous others.

The movie tells the story of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (Audrey Tautou), one of the world’s great fashion designers, from her arrival at a French orphanage to the heights of the fashion world.

Additional films are: Le fils de l’épicier (The Grocer’s Son), Feb. 14; Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men), Feb. 21; and Entre les murs (The Class), Feb. 28.

The Tournées Festival is hosted by Westminster’s Departments of Modern Languages and English in conjunction with the Jake Erhardt International Film Series. The festival is supported by a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange and support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the French Ministry of Culture (CNC), The Florence Gould Foundation, the Grand Marnier Foundation, and Highbrow Entertainment.

Westminster faculty involved in planning and organizing the festival are: Dr. Andrew Ade, associate professor of English; Dr. Jeffrey Bersett, associate professor and chairman of Westminster’s Department of Modern Languages; Dr. Leslie Kealhofer, visiting assistant professor of French; and Dr. Deborah Mitchell, professor of English and film studies.
