Catholic radio station launches in Youngstown

Living Bread Radio has launched 89.5 FM, WILB, Boardman/Youngstown.  The new radio station began broadcasting its Catholic talk format on March 5.

“We are very excited to bring Catholic talk radio to Youngstown, the seat of our Diocese,” said Barbara Gaskell, general manager.  “Another 200,000 souls will be able to tune in and hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, 24 hours a day in Mahoning County.”

A sister station, AM 1060 in Canton, has been airing full time Catholic programming since July 1, 2004.

Nationally syndicated programs include: “The Son Rise Morning Show,” “Catholic Connection,” “Women of Grace,” “Open Line,” “Kresta in the Afternoon,” and “Catholic Answers.“

“Our studio is home to Dr. Ray Guarendi’s syndicated show ‘The Doctor is In,’ heard on over 180 stations across the United States. We’re proud to have such a quality program in our line-up,” said Gaskell.

Living Bread Radio produces a number of local programs, including “Truth Matters,” “Morning Prayer,” “Liturgy of the Word,” “Blessed 2 Play” and “The Bread of Life Reflections.” Another program, “Life Line,” is produced in-house with host Melinda Knight and covers issues ranging from conception to natural death. Knight is director of the Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family for the Diocese of Youngstown. In addition, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Massillon will broadcast a Catholic Mass live at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays.

“We hope in the near future to broadcast Sunday Mass live from the Cathedral of St. Columba in Youngstown. Our finances are stretched thin after starting a station from scratch,” said Gaskell, “but we’re looking for a generous donor who would like to underwrite the $5,000 set up cost.”

Living Bread Radio is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization and 89.5 FM is a non-commercial station.
