AmeriCorps, YNDC partner on neighborhood-revitalization projects

For the next several weeks, members of AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) will be working with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. (YNDC) to improve housing conditions and vacant lots on the South Side of Youngstown. NCCC members will be in Youngstown from March 12 through April 27.

Workers will board vacant homes, clear empty lots and install more urban gardening facilities on the South Side. The work is part of a broader revitalization effort in the neighborhood.

“It’s obvious that the YNDC is working very hard to restore the neighborhoods of Youngstown, and I’m excited to help out in the community,” said NCCC member Jackie DeFranco.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, national service program in which 1,100 young adults serve each year. During their 10-month term, NCCC members – all 18 to 24 years old – work on teams of eight to 12 on projects that address critical needs related to natural disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, and urban and rural development.

In exchange for their service, NCCC members receive $5,550 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans. AmeriCorps NCCC is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. For more information about AmeriCorps NCCC, visit the Web site at
