World-renowned surgeon to speak local medical students, physicians on April 26


Local physicians and medical students will have the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Seymour I. Schwartz, world-renowned surgeon, educator and author, at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 26 at Politis Auditorium at Northside Medical Center.

The lecture, “Gifted Hands,” will discuss the history and importance of surgery, identify America’s contributions and anticipate its future.

Schwartz has authored over 250 scientific articles in journals and textbooks, was editor-in-chief of two editions of “Maingot’s Abdominal Operations,” and has published several editions of his book, “Principles of Surgery.” The book, which has sold over half a million copies, is considered a leading text for surgical-clinical practice and education.

Schwartz completed his surgical residency training program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1957. Afterward, he joined the surgical faculty there where he has remained as a distinguished alumni professor of surgery.

Schwartz has served as the president of  the Society of Clinical Surgery (America’s oldest and most prestigious surgical society), the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the Central Surgical Association. He has been the recipient of many awards, having received the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons, the Berson Medical Alumni Award in Clinical Science from New York University, and the Albert David Kaiser Medal from the Rochester Academy of Medicine.

Schwartz has been elected to honorary fellowships in the major surgical societies across the world, and has received an Honoris Causa (doctorate) from the University of Lund (Sweden) and the Complutense University of Madrid and an Honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Wisconsin. He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine and the American Philosophical Society.
