YSU fitness assessment seeks to make Canfield hockey more competitive

Alex Arnold, a senior at Youngstown State University in Exercise Sciences program, has teamed up with the Canfield High School varsity hockey team to analyze the players fitness levels and design a high-tech conditioning program for the upcoming season.

The sports-fitness assessment occurs at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6 at Beeghly Center and will be conducted in cooperation with YSU’s Exercise Science department.

Arnold has played hockey at a very high skilled level, including a tryout with team U.S.A. After his hockey career, Arnold seeks to devoted his attention to helping athletes through his academic pursuits in exercise physiology.

Canfield has the only surviving high school-based hockey team in the tri-county area. The fitness assessment is part of an effort by Canfield hockey’s new board members to develop a competitive team. Canfield competes against larger programs in the Cleveland and Akron areas. This is challenging, due to the cost of travel and the depth of competition in those areas.

The event also seeks to develop awareness for the sport and to help keep high school hockey alive in the Mahoning County.
