Akron Children’s Hospital increases standing in U.S News & World Report listings

Akron Children’s Hospital has been ranked in eight pediatric specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, available online at <http://www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals>

Akron Children’s was ranked: 24th in urology, 28th in pulmonology, 30th  in neonatology, 31st in cancer, 34th in nephrology, 35th in orthopedics, 37th in neurology and neurosurgery and 49th in cardiology and heart surgery.

The rankings feature 50 hospitals in each of 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.

“The goal of our work in clinical care, education and research is simply to be the best we can be for the benefit of our patients and their families,” said Shawn Lyden, executive vice president for Akron Children’s. “However, being included among the best children’s hospitals in the nation is certainly gratifying.”

Last year, Akron Children’s made the U.S. News list in four areas: orthopedics (33th), pulmonology (40th), nephrology (42nd), and neonatology (48th).

This year, U.S. News surveyed 178 pediatric centers to obtain hard data, such as the availability of key resources and the ability to prevent complications and infections. The hospital survey made up 75 percent of the rankings. A separate reputational survey in which 1,500 pediatric specialists – 150 in each specialty – were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty made up the remaining 25 percent.

Lyden credits Akron Children’s growth, recruitment of top medical talent, and pursuit of excellence for the expanded recognition.

“Akron Children’s Hospital deserves high praise for its accomplishments,” said health rankings editor Avery Comarow. “Our goal at U.S. News is to identify and call attention to pediatric centers like Akron Children’s.”
