Public will gather to commemorate 35th anniversary of Black Monday

Steel workers and public officials who lived through the closing of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube’s steel mills on Sept. 19, 1977 will mark the 35th anniversary of the event known as Black Monday.

The event occurs at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Campbell Administration Building, 351 Tenney Ave., Campbell. The administration building is across the street from the location of the former United Steelworkers of America Local 1418 union hall.

William Sferra, who was president of the 5,000 member local in 1977, will moderate the discussion among local officials and former steelworkers.  Anyone with memorabilia is welcome to show it.

The event is open to the public, and mayors and other public officials from surrounding communities, any steel worker who remembers Black Monday and the general public are invited to attend. Call Sferra at 330-770-3966 at 330-792-6787 for details.
