Patrol releases names of those killed in multi-vehicle pileups on Ohio Turnpike

FREMONT – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a triple-fatal crash involving more than 40 vehicles on the Ohio Turnpike eastbound, in Sandusky County that also severely injured a trooper from the Milan Post.

The Patrol received a call about the first crash at 1:25 p.m. and dispatched a trooper to the scene. The trooper alerted dispatchers that he had been struck and pinned between two vehicles at 2:05 p.m. This crash started a chain reaction of crashes with two severe crash zones, one near the initial crash, near milepost 102 and one at the rear, near milepost 101. Approximately 50 vehicles were trapped between these two crash zones with minor or no damage to the vehicles.

Those killed in the first crash zone – that involved approximately 16 vehicles – have been identified as Hannah Matheny, 20, of Parma, Ohio, who was a passenger in a Ford Focus and Grzegorz A. Piwowarczyk, 42, of Palatine, Ill. who was driving a commercial vehicle.

The second crash zone, involving approximately 20 vehicles, resulted in the death of Janice M. Robb, 66, of Schererville, Ind.  The victim was a passenger in a Chevy Venture.

The injured trooper, Andrew Clouser, 29, was transported to Firelands Hospital in Sandusky with severe injuries. He was later transferred to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo where he is currently under observation in the intensive care unit.

The crash remains under investigation.
